What? We're building a new house?

In May, we decided to put our home on the market and begin the search for a new one.

We love our current house-we've been here for 4 years and have done a lot of work on it to make it just what we want. Just what we want, except that we'd like another room, another bathroom, a bigger garage, a fireplace, etc.

My idea was to find a lovely old home somewhere in Oakwood, Ohio. I've always been charmed by these houses and my husband always agreed whenever we drove through the neighborhoods and opined about how lovely they all are.

Then we started looking at those lovely old houses on the inside.

And, I found out that my husband really doesn't like old houses. His idea of moving into a different house was to move into a perfect house. I was still willing to sacrifice a little, but he had no interest in remodeling.

So, we kept looking.

We looked at tri-levels and ranches. I didn't like these because I feel like they all look the same, especially when you are in a neigborhood full of them.

Eventually, (it sounds like a long time, but only a month has passed...) we decided to build. We're not building custom--we're not crazy, don't have the money, and don't have the time. But, we are building a lovely home with Ryan homes, a Bainbridge model, which continues to escalate in price every time we talk about options.

Right now, we have a contract on our current home, and a contract with Ryan (with a contingency until we close on our home) to build our new house.

In the time between houses, we will be renters again, in an apartment complex. Boo!

This blog is going to document our adventure in homebuilding. Neither of us have done this before, and I'm sure there will be many lessons to learn. Hopefully, if someone is reading this, they can benefit from the mistakes we make!
